Cardinal Gugerotti Urges Unity Among Eastern Catholic Bishops in Europe

Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti called for a coordinated voice among Eastern Catholic Churches across Europe during the annual meeting of European Eastern Catholic bishops in Máriapócs, Hungary. The Prefect of the Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali delivered greetings from Pope Leone XIV to the assembled church leaders while addressing pressing geopolitical conflicts and the rising spiritual engagement of young Europeans.

The annual gathering, organized by the Consiglio delle Conferenze episcopali d’Europa (CCEE), runs through Friday, September 18. Cardinal Gugerotti pointed to a shared sentiment across these communities, emphasizing that Eastern Catholic traditions face a distinct landscape shaped by secularization and individualism, yet countered by a notable openness among youth.

Liturgical Expression and Youth Engagement

Cardinal Gugerotti urged church leaders to ensure that liturgy avoids becoming a purely publicistic act confined to those who celebrate it. Instead, he argued that rich imagery and lyrical traditions should serve as a source of immediate meditation and reflection.

The cardinal noted that Eastern liturgies express the Christian message in a manner that resonates closely with the human heart. Young people searching for God, even without formal theological training, can find immediate answers to their spiritual needs within these traditional texts and celebrations, according to the dicastery prefect.

Impact of War in Ukraine and the Middle East

Turning to current geopolitical crises, Cardinal Gugerotti addressed the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, highlighting their immediate and long-term psychological tolls. He warned against the human tendency to pretend war does not exist simply to survive day-to-day life.

The prefect called for concrete solidarity with Middle Eastern Christian communities facing extreme instability and suffering, which often forces families to leave their ancestral homelands. He stressed the importance of maintaining contact with these populations so they do not feel isolated, adding that European communities must prepare to welcome displaced believers as an integral part of the wider Catholic identity.

Pastoral Challenges and Transnational Communities

Addressing the broader assembly, Greek-Catholic Bishop Ábel Szocska of Nyíregyháza emphasized the need to rediscover Christ through the depth of Eastern liturgy, theology, and spiritual discipline. The meeting coincides with the 330th anniversary of the first weeping of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God at the Máriapócs shrine, an event Bishop Szocska cited as a call for a hopeful, authentic witness in contemporary Europe.

Archieparch Péter Fülöp Kocsis of Hajdúdorog outlined the multinational scope of the attendees, who traveled from Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, North Macedonia, Italy, Austria, Germany, and other nations. Kocsis highlighted the dual pastoral challenge of supporting believers in their historical homelands while simultaneously serving hundreds of thousands of faithful who now reside in Western European cities and other global regions due to migration and historical shifts.
