Elderly Woman Dies After Choking on Surgical Gloves at Northern Ireland Care Home

An 83-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease died after choking on disposable surgical gloves while residing at Oakridge Care Home in Ballynahinch, County Down, Northern Ireland. The incident, described as a “tragic accident” and a “horrific incident” by a healthcare assistant, occurred in August 2022.

Louise Wilson, a healthcare assistant who worked night shifts at Oakridge Care Home for approximately 18 months, provided evidence via video-link during an inquest held at Belfast’s Laganside courts. She stated the death was a tragic accident she would never forget. The Belfast Telegraph reported on the inquest findings.

Additional Findings

The inquest also revealed that Margaret Wilson was thought to have eaten pages from a magazine on the same evening as the choking incident. According to a Facebook post by the Belfast Telegraph, this unusual behavior was noted during the investigation.

Margaret Wilson is survived by her children, Elaine and Andrew, and her mother-in-law, Rosemary. She was also a grandmother to Anthony, Donna, Nichola, Thomas, and Isaac. Funeral Times and Bobby Morrison Funeral Directors both published death notices detailing her family.
