Malaysia Secures Third Rank Globally for International Student Growth in ICEF Insights 2027

Malaysia now ranks third in the world for international student growth among the “Big 14” leading study destinations. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir announced the milestone, noting that the country achieved a 70% increase in international student numbers over a five-year period alongside a 16% annual growth rate within the top destination group.

The findings were unveiled during ICEF Berlin 2026, held from November 1 to 3, where ICEF Insights 2027 positioned Malaysia alongside traditional study powerhouses like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Data cited by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) showed the country hosted 159,100 international students as of December 2025, a figure that has since climbed to more than 170,000.

Source Markets and Cost Advantages Driving Enrollment

China remains the largest source market for Malaysian higher education, accounting for 62,200 students with an 11% increase, followed by Indonesia with 13,000 students, representing a 13% rise. Bangladesh contributed 11,400 students following a 29% surge, while India and Pakistan recorded 6,200 and 6,000 students respectively, marking growth rates of 15% and 20%.

Malaysia’s combination of quality education, affordable study and living costs, and a safe, multicultural environment continues to attract students and families. English is widely used in higher education, providing students with access to a broad range of programmes.

Airport Arrival Support Wins International Recognition

EMGS chief executive officer Novie Tajuddin led a delegation of five Malaysian higher education institutions to the Berlin conference. He emphasized that the recruitment progress relies on institutional commitment and ministry backing. This is a proud achievement for Malaysia, he said, adding, It reflects the sustained commitment of our higher education institutions to delivering quality education, strengthening international partnerships and providing an experience that students value and recommend to others. He also stated, Our institutions are central to this progress. Their dedication, together with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and our partners, continues to build confidence in Malaysia as a preferred study destination. He further noted, Our priority is to ensure that growing interest is supported by a positive student experience. EMGS will continue working with our institutions and partners to provide clear information, facilitate student pass applications and support students from the moment they arrive.

Backing student recruitment efforts, the International Student Arrival Centre operated by EMGS won the Student Support Award at The PIEoneer Awards 2026 in London in September. Beating seven other finalists from Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom—including UCAS and the UK Council for International Student Affairs—the arrival facility operates 24 hours a day at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminals 1 and 2 to guide students through immigration and entry procedures.
