Care Worker Stabbing Triggers Bridgend Murder Investigation
Eleanor Barnfield, a 47-year-old care worker, suffered fatal stab wounds while working at a retirement housing complex in Bridgend on Monday, October 19, The Sun reported. Barnfield attempted to drive herself to the hospital after the attack, but collapsed at the wheel and crashed her car into a wall just 300 yards away from the Ger-y-Nant sheltered housing complex. South Wales Police arrested a 61-year-old local man on suspicion of murder following a standoff at the property, while family and colleagues paid tribute to the dedicated mother and carer.
Family Tributes and Community Reaction
Eleanor’s family described her as the “kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world” in a statement released on Wednesday. “She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock,” they added.

Colleagues and neighbours also expressed profound shock. Jo Oak, chief executive of housing association Valleys to Coast, stated that the organization was “devastated by the tragic death of our colleague,” noting that Barnfield was a much-valued team member who made an important contribution to the community, according to the BBC. Neighbour Sue Thomas told The Sun that residents had returned to the complex following the incident, adding that people do not expect to go to work and fail to come home.
Emergency Response and Police Investigation Timeline
Police received a 999 call from Barnfield at 11:25 am on Monday after she was attacked at the 13-flat retirement complex. The call disconnected, and control room attempts to call her back failed. Barnfield chose to drive toward the Princess of Wales Hospital, located a mile and a half away.
