LONDON — Jamie Carragher apologized to Aston Villa on Saturday after the English club announced plans to take legal action against the former Liverpool defender for remarks made on a podcast. The club’s chairman, Nassef Sawiris, stated on X that Villa would initiate legal proceedings against Carragher for “unacceptable insults about the club and its fans.”

Carragher’s comments, which sparked the backlash, included an expletive directed at Aston Villa fans and a statement that “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.” The former player made the remarks during a discussion on the Stick to Football podcast, where he addressed the hierarchy of English football. “There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” he said, adding, “But there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they [Villa] will take their manager or they will take their players, so shut the f— up, Villa fans.”

Carragher’s Apology and Context

On Saturday, Carragher issued a statement on X, writing, “I’d like to apologize to Aston Villa, the owners & their fans. My language this week was clumsy & wrong.” He claimed his comments were “tongue in cheek” but acknowledged they “did not come across that way.” The club’s response, published on Friday, emphasized its commitment to “our ascension in English and European football,” without specifying the legal grounds for its action.

Background on Carragher

Carragher, 48, is a prominent soccer pundit working for Sky Sports and CBS since retiring in 2013. His remarks on the podcast followed criticism of his suggestion that Aston Villa manager Unai Emery might consider taking over at Manchester United if Michael Carrick was fired.

What remains unclear is whether Carragher’s apology will resolve the matter, as Aston Villa has stated they will proceed with legal action.
