In 1969, as humanity took its first steps on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, a unique celebration of this milestone unfolded in Paris. French luxury house Cartier, renowned for its craftsmanship, was commissioned by the newspaper Le Figaro to create gold replicas of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), the spacecraft that enabled the historic moon landing. The Commission and Creation of the Replicas

The project emerged in the wake of Apollo 11’s success, with Le Figaro seeking a tangible tribute to honor the mission. Cartier, known for its innovative designs and expertise in metallurgy, took on the challenge. Three miniature LEMs were produced, each standing approximately 15 centimeters tall. The models were crafted using yellow gold for the body, a material typically associated with luxury items like jewelry and decorative boxes, and white gold for the landing gear, chosen for its durability.

The three LEM replicas were presented to the Apollo 11 astronauts—Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins—during their 38-day goodwill tour of Europe. The gifts were funded through a public subscription initiated by Le Figaro following the mission’s safe return to Earth.
