Casio Revives Calculator Nostalgia with Limited Edition Designs

Casio is tapping into a resurgence of interest in retro tech with a series of new calculator designs, ranging from colorful, everyday models to exquisitely crafted, limited-edition pieces. These releases coincide with the 60th anniversary of Casio’s electronic desktop calculator business.

Colorful and Stylish Options

In November 2025, Casio announced 25 new design calculators, categorized into two lines: the Colorful Calculator and the Stylish Calculator. The Colorful Calculator lineup features 15 models with a broad palette of colors – including monotone, pastel and smoky tones – designed for both casual and business utilize. The Mini Desk Type MS-20YC comes in 10 colors, while the Portable Type SL-310YC is available in 5 colors.

The Stylish Calculator lineup consists of 10 models focused on refined colors and premium textures. Variations include a metal-finish Iron Black with a hairline texture, Ice Blue and Shiny Gold with a blasted finish, and Misty Green and Silky White with a soft matte-pearl sheen. These new designs represent the first major update to Casio’s calculator series in eight years, reflecting current trends.

The S100X Urushi Edition: A Handcrafted Masterpiece

Taking the concept of design to a new level, Casio has released the S100X Urushi Edition, nicknamed “The Special One.” This limited-edition desktop calculator is based on Casio’s flagship S100 model and is crafted using the traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer technique.

Casio collaborated with Yamakyu Shitsuki, a lacquerware workshop established in 1930, and master crafter Ryuji Umeda to create the S100X. The process, called tamenuri, involves layering lacquer tree sap on a milled aluminum housing over a month, achieving depth through repeated applications. The calculator is then polished to a mirror-like shine.

Only 625 of the S100X Urushi Edition calculators are being produced, with each one being unique due to the handcrafted nature of the Urushi technique. The calculator, priced at ¥99,000 (approximately $625 USD), has already sold out.

A Resurgence of Retro Tech

These releases reflect a broader trend of renewed interest in retro technology. While smartphones have largely replaced calculators for many tasks, Casio’s new designs appeal to collectors, design enthusiasts, and those seeking a tactile, reliable alternative to digital devices.
