Emmy-winning actress Catherine O’Hara, best known for Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone, died from a pulmonary embolism, according to her death certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Canadian-born performer died on 30 January at the age of 71. The certificate lists rectal cancer as the underlying cause.
O’Hara was born in Toronto in 1954 and began her career with the Second City comedy troupe, later becoming a breakout star on the influential sketch series SCTV.
Her film work ranged from Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice to a long list of comedic roles, including collaborations with director Christopher Guest on mockumentaries such as Best in Show and A Mighty Wind.
She became a household name worldwide as Kate McCallister, the mother of Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), in Home Alone, and later returned for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
In recent years, she earned fresh acclaim for playing Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, created by Dan Levy and Eugene Levy. Her performance won her the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020, along with a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
O’Hara was married to production designer Bo Welch, and they had two sons.
