CDP Prefectural Chapters Mostly Oppose Merger With Centrist Reform Alliance

Opposition parties in Japan face internal friction as regional organizations resist consolidation efforts, according to a survey released by Jiji Press.

Constitutional Democratic Party Chapters Reject Centrist Reform Alliance Merger

Fifteen prefectural chapters of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) oppose merging into the Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA), according to a Jiji Press survey published in February. In contrast, only seven chapters support the consolidation, while 25 chapters did not provide an answer.

The survey polled senior prefectural chapter officials earlier this month to gauge grassroots sentiment regarding the potential party integration. The resistance from local organizations follows a difficult electoral period for the opposition coalition.

Impact of Lower House Election Results on Party Unity

The Centrist Reform Alliance formed six months ago, bringing together House of Representatives lawmakers from both the CDP and Komeito. However, the newly aligned group suffered a crushing defeat in the February Lower House election.

That electoral setback appears to drive the reluctance among the CDP’s local organizations.
