Centric Health Agrees to Acquisition by US Affiliate Healthspan Partners
Centric Health, the largest player in the Irish primary healthcare market, has agreed to a buyout by Healthspan Partners, a US affiliate of Bon Secours Mercy Health, in a transaction industry sources said would have been in the region of €350 million. The deal marks a major ownership shift for the domestic healthcare network, which currently operates 90 locations across the State and serves more than 700,000 patients through a team of 420 GPs.
Founded in Ireland in 2003 by Dr Maurice Cox and Dr Ray Power with a single practice in Phibsborough, north Dublin, in 2004, the business grew significantly. It launched the VHI SwiftCare clinics in a 2005 joint venture before selling them outright to the insurer in 2017. Since 2018, the business has been owned by Five Arrows, the alternative assets arm of Rothschild & Co, with Dr Cox retaining a minority stake.
Financial Performance Leading Up to the Healthspan Buyout
Financial accounts show that Centric recorded a total turnover of €143.9 million in 2024, representing a 13.5 per cent increase compared to the previous year. That figure comprised €76.2 million in private client revenue alongside €67.6 million generated through the medical card business. Domestic operations accounted for 80 per cent of that total revenue.
Beyond Ireland, the primary care group expanded its international footprint into the Netherlands in 2020, where it currently runs 11 practices. It entered the German market the following year and now operates 23 clinics there, though Ireland continues to account for the vast majority of its business.
Regulatory Review and Leadership Continuity Under New Owners
The transaction remains subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and other relevant regulatory authorities. Neither buying nor selling parties disclosed the exact financial terms, though industry sources said Healthspan would have paid in the region of €350 million.
Dr Cox will remain chief executive of the business under the new owners and a shareholder in the business. He noted that the firm sought a partner with international reach and financial depth to support its ongoing expansion.
We see real opportunities to expand our network, both geographically and through digital innovation,
Dr Cox said. As we continue to grow, we will keep investing to make sure the relationship between doctor and patient stays personal and local, because that is the model that best serves our patients.
Operational Continuity and Future Growth Plans for Patient Networks
Practices within the Centric Health network will maintain the existing brand name and retain full operational and clinical independence.
Many participating GPs operate under profit-sharing agreements with the company, and executive management confirmed that Patients will not experience any change as a result of this investment and do not need to take any action.
The incoming capital aims to accelerate expansion initiatives across Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Management stated that the investment will also fund ongoing population health research projects designed to inform future healthcare planning and clinical policy in the countries where it operates.
