Collagen is a central structural protein in the human body, providing tension in the skin, stability in connective tissue, and supporting muscles and bones. Though, the bodyS collagen production declines wiht age, decreasing by approximately one to one and a half percent annually. This loss impacts elasticity, strength, and regeneration, fueling the popularity of collagen supplements.

New research led by Collin Y. ewald investigates which component of collagen has the most important effect. The team discovered that a specific ratio of three amino acids – glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline – may influence biological age.

Aging Healthier: special Mixture Proves Prosperous

Published in “npj Aging”, the study combined experiments with model organisms, laboratory cell analyses, and an observational study with humans. researchers aimed to determine if a specific composition of these three collagen building blocks supports processes related to healthy aging.

Scientists initially tested various amino acid ratios on C. elegans nematodes, a common model organism in aging research. A mixture with a 3:1:1 ratio (three parts glycine, one part proline, and one part hydroxyproline) proved most effective. Treated worms lived longer and maintained greater mobility with age.Individual amino acids alone did not produce this effect.

A six-month trial with older mice yielded positive results: animals receiving the same amino acid mixture exhibited improved grip strength and reduced visceral fat,while maintaining stable body weight and overall health.Researchers reported no signs of intolerance.
