Chappell Roan Addresses Security Incident Following Jorginho’s Allegations

Grammy-winning singer Chappell Roan has responded to accusations made by Brazilian-Italian soccer star Jorginho that a security guard mistreated his 11-year-old stepdaughter after recognizing the singer at a hotel in São Paulo, Brazil. The incident occurred while Roan was in the country for the Lollapalooza Brazil music festival.

Jorginho’s Account of the Incident

Jorginho Frello, widely known as Jorginho, detailed the incident on Instagram, stating that his wife, Catherine Harding, and their daughter were having breakfast when Roan walked by their table. His daughter, recognizing the singer, “got excited and just wanted to develop sure it was really her,” according to Jorginho’s post. He emphasized that his daughter did not approach Roan or ask for anything.

Jorginho alleges that a security guard then approached their table and spoke “in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter.” He expressed his disappointment, stating Roan “does not deserve her fans’ affection” following the alleged treatment of his family. His stepdaughter is the daughter of Catherine Harding and British actor Jude Law.

Chappell Roan’s Response

Roan addressed the allegations on Instagram, clarifying that the security guard was not part of her personal security detail. She stated she did not even spot a woman and a child during the breakfast encounter. “I didn’t even see a woman and a child. No one came up to me. No one bothered me,” Roan explained in a video posted to her Instagram account.

Roan further emphasized that she did not request the security guard to approach the family and believes it was unfair for security to assume negative intentions without any provocation. “It’s unfair for security to just assume that someone has subpar intentions when they have no reason to believe that since no action was even taken,” she said. She explicitly stated, “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children.”

Political Fallout and Further Reactions

The incident also drew the attention of Rio de Janeiro’s fresh mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, who stated that Roan would not be permitted to perform on Copacabana Beach during his tenure, referencing previous performances by Madonna, Lady Gaga, and an upcoming concert planned for Shakira in May. He even questioned whether Shakira would agree to perform under similar circumstances.

Following Jorginho’s initial post, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro announced that Roan would “never” play at the annual Todo Mundo no Rio festival, though she was not scheduled to perform there this year.
