This is significant because OpenAI has detailed plans to develop advertising as a new revenue stream. though, postponed doesn’t mean canceled. The situation could change quickly. Currently, the company relies heavily on investments for funding. While subscriptions from individual and API users provide some income, it’s not enough to cover the considerable costs of AI research, growth, and operation. Google and Meta already use advertising revenue from their existing services to subsidize their AI efforts.

Altman didn’t elaborate on the specific threats outlined in his alert. Concerns about stagnating user numbers are also reportedly a factor. Chief Financial Officer sarah Friar discussed this during the last quarterly earnings presentation.

Tests with an advertising environment are already embedded within ChatGPT’s program code. It seems OpenAI was preparing to introduce ads directly into the chatbot interface. The Information reports that the company has been working on a system to show users “sponsored content” based on their conversations. This could involve suggesting relevant products or services within the chat flow.

One might suggest that the Gemini 3 launch has forced OpenAI to reassess its priorities. It appears the company is now focused on strengthening its core AI technology before aggressively pursuing new revenue streams. It’s a strategic shift driven by increased competition and the need to secure long-term financial stability.
