ChatGPT Library Now Available: A Deep Dive into OpenAI’s New File Storage Feature

OpenAI has begun rolling out its highly anticipated ‘Library’ feature for ChatGPT, offering users a dedicated space to store personal files and images directly within the platform. This enhancement aims to streamline workflows by allowing users to easily reference previously uploaded content in future conversations, eliminating the require for repeated uploads.

The ChatGPT Library is currently available to users with a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Business subscription. The rollout is global, excluding users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Automatic File Saving and Accessibility

A key benefit of the Library is its automatic file-saving functionality. ChatGPT automatically saves uploaded files – including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images – in a secure location. Users may find that the Library is already populated with files uploaded in the past two weeks, as this is an expected behavior of the system. According to OpenAI, this feature provides a convenient way to access past work without re-uploading.

“ChatGPT automatically saves uploaded and created files, including files uploaded in chats…in a dedicated, secure location so they can be easily accessed later,” OpenAI noted.

Uploading Files to the Library

Users can upload files to the Library through the following steps:

  • Open the composer menu (the attachment/add button).
  • Select “Add from library.”
  • Choose the file you seek to use.

File Management and Deletion

Whereas ChatGPT automatically saves uploaded files, users retain control over their stored content. Files remain saved to a user’s account until manually deleted. Importantly, deleting a chat does not delete files saved in the Library.

To delete a file:

  • Select the file in the “Library” tab.
  • Click “Delete,” or click the trash icon next to the file.

OpenAI has stated that files will be removed from its servers within 30 days of deletion. The reason for this 30-day delay is likely related to legal or compliance requirements.

AI-Generated Images and the Library

It’s important to note that AI-generated images created within ChatGPT will continue to appear in the “Images” tab and will not be stored in the Library. The Library is specifically designed for files uploaded by users.
