Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — Apple start integrating the assistant artificial intelligence (AI) third parties into the CarPlay ecosystem. This is a breath of fresh air for application developers such as OpenAIGoogle, and Anthropic to optimize their in-vehicle services.
This integration allows users to access ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude directly from the car’s dashboard screen. The strategy represents a significant shift for Apple, which for years limited CarPlay voice control exclusively to Siri.
This integration aims to make it easier for drivers to carry out more complex and contextual voice commands without disturbing driving concentration. Drivers can then have interactive conversations or ask for in-depth service recommendations via the AI application of their choice.
“Drivers can ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations without needing to take their hands off the wheel,” said Mark Gurman, quoted from MacRumors, Monday (9/2/2026).
Previously, user experiences in interacting with AI chatbots in cars tended to be fragmented and less efficient. Users must activate the app on their phone manually and rely on a limited standard Bluetooth audio connection for safe driving.
Through this update, the voice mode on the chatbot application will appear automatically as soon as the user taps the application icon in the CarPlay interface. The policy ensures that the transition of use remains safe for drivers in various road scenarios.
The iOS 26.4 software update is said to be the main foundation for the presence of a “smarter Siri” through the integration of Apple Intelligence. This system update is designed to be a bridge to more personalized and context-aware AI interactions within the vehicle cabin.
However, Apple still imposes strict technical limitations on its competitors’ voice assistants. Third-party chatbots are not given permission to replace Siri’s physical buttons or use standalone trigger words like “Hey Google” in the car.
Additionally, external AI assistants will not have access to in-depth system controls on the CarPlay Ultra version. The system remains exclusively protected to maintain operational consistency in crucial vehicle functions such as cabin temperature regulation.
Internal reports say this feature is predicted to arrive in the next few months as part of the iOS 26.4 or iOS 27 cycle. The speed of implementation in the field will depend largely on the readiness of developers to adapt their applications to the CarPlay standard.
