Cheongdo-gun Prioritizes Child Hygiene with Handwashing Education Program

Cheongdo-gun Children’s Meal Management Support Center recently conducted a handwashing hygiene education program for 70 children from four local child welfare facilities. The initiative, held from February 23rd to 26th, 2026, aimed to prevent infectious diseases and reinforce personal hygiene practices among vulnerable children in the community.

Experiential Learning for Lasting Habits

The training went beyond traditional lectures, employing an experiential approach using hand plates – tools that cultivate and visually demonstrate bacteria remaining on hands. Children photographed their hands on plates and observed bacterial growth over time, providing a tangible understanding of the importance of hand hygiene. This method allowed participants to visually assess hand contamination and appreciate the demand for thorough handwashing.

Six-Step Handwashing Technique

The program included instruction on a six-step handwashing technique tailored to children’s understanding, emphasizing often-missed areas like palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under fingernails. The goal was to ensure children not only understood why handwashing is important but also how to do it effectively.

Community Collaboration for Child Wellbeing

A representative from the center expressed hope that the training would instill handwashing as a vital health-protective behavior. The center plans to continue offering customized training programs in collaboration with the local community to enhance hygiene management skills among children from vulnerable groups. These efforts aim to promote healthy growth and create a safe feeding environment for all children in Cheongdo-gun.
