Chiang Mai Crowned Most Affordable Digital Nomad Destination in 2026
Chiang Mai, Thailand, has been identified as the most affordable city globally for digital nomads earning $2,000 per month, according to a February 2026 report by Life in Armenia magazine.1
The northern Thai city enables remote workers to maintain a cost of living under $1,000 per month, resulting in approximately $1,021 in disposable income – the highest among the 28 global destinations surveyed. Bangkok secured the second position, with average monthly expenses around $1,200 and a greater concentration of coworking spaces than Chiang Mai.
Asian Cities Dominate Affordability Rankings
The study, which assessed rent, living expenses, internet costs and coworking space fees, revealed a strong presence of Asian cities in the top five. Bangkok ranked second, whereas Bali, Indonesia, came in fifth. Seoul, South Korea, also featured within the top ten.
Key Factors Driving Chiang Mai’s Appeal
Thailand’s visa-free entry policy for citizens of 112 countries and its remarkably low mobile data costs – averaging just $0.41 per gigabyte 1 – were highlighted as significant advantages for digital nomads.
