Chilean Wine Recall in Japan Due to Unapproved Additive

Approximately 40,000 bottles and cans of Chilean wine produced by Concha y Toro and distributed in Japan by Mercian, a subsidiary of Kirin Holdings, are being voluntarily recalled due to the presence of copper citrate, a food additive not authorized for use in Japan. The recall, announced on February 17, 2026, affects three varieties of the Frontera line: Frontera Sparkling Rosé (canned and bottled), and Frontera Ice Rosé (canned).

What is Copper Citrate?

Copper citrate is used in the winemaking process to correct undesirable flavors resulting from fermentation. While approved for use internationally by organizations like the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), it is not currently permitted under Japanese food safety regulations. Diario El Centro reports that despite its widespread use elsewhere, Japanese regulations specifically prohibit its inclusion in wine.

Which Wines are Affected?

The recall specifically impacts the following Frontera wines:

  • Frontera Sparkling Rosé (280ml can)
  • Frontera Ice Rosé (280ml can)
  • Frontera Rosé (750ml bottle)

According to The Clinic, approximately 620,000 units of these products have been shipped to Japan since their launch in 2024, but the current volume in circulation is estimated at around 40,000 units.

Health Concerns and Company Response

Mercian has stated that the potential health impact from the additive is considered “extremely low.” Pauta reports that the company is conducting the recall as a precautionary measure to ensure full compliance with Japanese health regulations. Mercian has issued a public apology for any inconvenience caused.

Implications for Chilean Wine Exports

This situation highlights the importance of understanding and adhering to the specific regulatory requirements of each export market. Japan is a significant Asian market for Chilean wines, and this recall underscores the demand for close coordination between producers, exporters, and health authorities in both countries to prevent future issues. Latercera notes that regulatory differences between countries necessitate careful attention to detail in the winemaking and export processes.
