Chilean Patent Filings Reach Record Highs Driven by Local Innovation

Chile recorded a historic surge in patent applications during the first half of 2024, with domestic inventors filing 296 requests according to the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI). This figure represents an unprecedented peak in local activity, significantly outpacing the 181 applications registered during the same period in 2023. The growth highlights a shift toward locally driven technological development, particularly in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

Why Are Patent Applications Rising in Chile?

The increase in patent filings is the result of long-term efforts to integrate the intellectual property system with the needs of local entrepreneurs and researchers, according to INAPI National Director Esteban Figueroa. While filings from residents remained stagnant between 119 and 152 annually from 2017 to 2024, the 2024 data marks a 63% increase over the previous year’s record. Figueroa notes that inventors are increasingly viewing intellectual property as a strategic asset, acknowledging that current ideas serve as the foundation for future economic growth.

For the first time, a city outside the Santiago Metropolitan Region has topped the national ranking for patent submissions. La Serena leads the country with 44 applications, surpassing Santiago at 39 and Las Condes at 26. This geographic shift is attributed to programs like INAPI Más Cerca, which provides regional training and digital tools to bridge the gap between centralized government services and researchers in distant provinces. Concepción and Antofagasta follow in the rankings with 18 and 16 applications, respectively.

What Industries Are Driving Technological Development?

Innovation in Chile is heavily concentrated in health-related fields and applied sciences. Pharmaceutical products account for 24.64% of resident applications, followed by biotechnology at 15.76%. Other significant areas include organic chemistry (12.57%), materials chemistry (8.57%), and chemical engineering (8.19%). Collectively, these sectors represent over 60% of all domestic filings, indicating a specialized focus on high-value scientific research.

How Does the Surge Compare to International Activity?

The recent growth in patent activity is almost entirely domestic. While individual inventors saw a 101% increase in filings compared to the previous year, requests from non-resident applicants—typically international corporations—grew by only 5%, rising from 1,063 to 1,120. This contrast underscores that the current dynamism in the Chilean market is largely driven by local human capital rather than external investment trends.

A patent provides the holder with an exclusive right to commercially exploit an invention for up to 20 years. During this term, third parties are prohibited from manufacturing, selling, or importing the protected product or process without authorization. Beyond individual protection, these rights facilitate technology transfer, allowing universities and research centers to license developments or secure investment based on their verified intellectual property assets.
