China Backs Iran’s Leadership Succession, Warns Against Foreign Interference
Beijing has affirmed its support for Iran’s sovereignty following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader, opposing any threats to the country’s new leadership. This comes after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli strikes last week.
China Supports Iran’s Internal Decision
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Monday, March 9, 2026, that Iran’s decision to appoint the late Khamenei’s son was an internal matter legally valid for the country. “Iran’s decision to appoint young Khamenei was based on its constitution,” Jiakun said, according to CNBC.
Warning to the U.S. And Israel
China’s stance serves as a direct warning to Israel and the United States, particularly in light of previous Israeli threats to target any successor to Ali Khamenei. Guo Jiakun emphasized that Beijing strongly rejects any foreign intervention that could disrupt political stability in Iran, urging the international community to respect Iran’s sovereignty amidst escalating conflict. “China opposes interfering in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity must be respected,” Guo stressed, as reported by POLITICO.
Escalating Middle East Tensions
The situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile following continued attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory. These attacks have prompted a strong response from Tehran, including missile and drone attacks on Israel and targeting of neighboring Gulf countries hosting U.S. Military bases. This escalating tension has raised global fears of a large-scale war involving major world powers. South China Morning Post reports that further negotiations are ongoing with the U.S.
International Condemnation and Support
While Western leaders have largely welcomed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, authoritarian states such as China, Russia, and North Korea have condemned the action, as have Iranian proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Times of Israel details the widespread condemnation from these nations.
