China’s High-Speed Rail Expansion: Pioneering Underwater Tunnels and Network Integration
China continues to solidify its position as a global leader in high-speed rail technology, increasingly employing innovative engineering solutions like extensive underwater tunnels to expand its network. These advancements are not only accelerating connectivity across the country but also setting new benchmarks for railway construction and efficiency.
Yangtze River Tunnels: A New Era of Subaquatic Rail Infrastructure
A significant milestone was recently achieved with the completion of the underwater section of a high-speed rail tunnel stretching over 14km (9 miles) beneath a busy segment of the Yangtze River. This tunnel, linking Shanghai’s Chongming Island with Taicang city in Jiangsu province, is slated for completion by the end of 2026. Trains will be capable of traveling at speeds of up to 350km/h (217mph) through the tunnel, significantly reducing travel times between cities along China’s eastern coastline and Hefei, the capital of Anhui province.
The project utilizes a tunnel boring machine (TBM), named “Linghang,” the world’s largest-diameter high-speed-rail shield tunneling machine, accelerating excavation work 89 meters beneath the Yangtze River. The tunnel is the longest of its kind ever constructed in China, with a 15-meter diameter.
Investment and Scale of the Project
This Yangtze River tunnel is part of a larger high-speed railway project extending 2,000km westward to Chengdu, representing a substantial investment of over 500 billion yuan (approximately US$72 billion). The project demonstrates China’s commitment to developing efficient, integrated cross-regional transport networks.
Expanding the National High-Speed Rail Network
China is actively expanding its high-speed rail network, with at least six such underwater tunnels currently planned or under construction. The Yangtze River Delta region, a major economic hub, is set to open five new high-speed railway sections in 2026, with a total investment exceeding 130 billion yuan (about US$18.82 billion). By the end of 2025, the region boasted over 15,400 kilometers of operational railway tracks, with high-speed rail accounting for more than 8,100 kilometers.
