China Warns of Escalating Risks in Outer Space

A Chinese diplomat recently voiced serious concerns regarding the increasing militarization of space and the potential for an arms race. The diplomat highlighted the growing reliance on commercial satellites for military purposes, specifically for reconnaissance and battlefield communications,as a key driver of instability.
He cited recent events to illustrate the escalating dangers. These included instances of close and potentially hazardous approaches to the Chinese space station by foreign objects. Furthermore, the December 2025 disintegration of a satellite, which created over one hundred pieces of trackable space debris, underscored the physical risks to space assets and the potential for cascading collisions.
The diplomat warned that the blurring lines between civilian and military space activities are fueling a perilous trend. The increasing use of commercial infrastructure for military applications complicates attribution and raises the stakes for potential conflict in orbit. This, he argued, actively promotes an arms race in outer space, threatening the long-term sustainability of space activities for all nations.
