China Leads Global Humanoid Robot Push, Showcasing Advances at Spring Festival Gala

Beijing is aggressively promoting the development and adoption of humanoid robots, a strategy highlighted by a prominent display at the annual CCTV Spring Festival gala, China’s most-watched television program. The event showcased the nation’s cutting-edge industrial policy and ambition to dominate the future of manufacturing, and robotics.

Robotics Take Center Stage

Four rising humanoid robot startups – Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab – demonstrated their latest innovations at the gala, a televised event often compared to the Super Bowl in the United States. The program featured multiple segments with humanoid robots, including a martial arts demonstration by over a dozen Unitree humanoids performing complex sequences with swords, poles, and nunchucks alongside child performers. Dominating the Market

China accounted for 90% of the approximately 13,000 humanoid robots shipped globally in the past year, significantly outpacing competitors like the United States, according to research firm Omdia. Morgan Stanley projects that China’s humanoid robot sales will more than double to 28,000 units this year.

The gala’s spotlight on robotics is indicative of strong government support for the sector. President Xi Jinping has met with five robotics startup founders in the past year, a number comparable to the number of electric vehicle and semiconductor entrepreneurs he met with during the same period, signaling the strategic importance of the industry. The displays highlighted innovations in areas like AI-powered software enabling robots to perform fine motor tasks suitable for factory settings.

Future Outlook and Competition

Several Chinese humanoid robot companies, including AgiBot and Unitree, are preparing for initial public offerings this year. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, anticipates that Chinese companies will be his biggest competitors as Tesla pivots towards embodied AI and its Optimus humanoid robot. Musk stated, “People outside China underestimate China, but China is an ass-kicker next level.”
