Thailand has stated its military objective is to “deter and destroy Cambodia’s military capability to a level necessary to preserve Thai state security and public safety,” while Cambodia has launched counterattacks in response to what it describes as Thai aggression. China maintains close relationships with both countries and has increasingly positioned itself as a mediator in the dispute. Wang Yi noted that China was ready to help mediate between the parties as early as July 2025, and since further fighting broke out in December, Beijing has taken a more active role in diplomatic efforts.
