Nordic Countries Enjoy Visa-Free Access to China in 2026

Citizens of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland can now travel to China for short stays of up to 30 days without a visa, under a new policy implemented in February 2026. This initiative is part of China’s broader effort to revitalize inbound tourism and streamline international travel following a period of strict border controls.

New Visa-Free Policy Details

The visa-free policy, which began during the 2026 Spring Festival, currently applies to citizens of 50 countries. Eligible travelers from the Nordic nations can enter China for tourism, business, or family visits without prior visa application, for stays of up to 30 days per visit.

China’s Shift in Travel Policies

This move represents a significant shift in China’s travel policies. For several years, China maintained strict border controls, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The easing of these restrictions and the introduction of visa-free travel for several countries, including those in the Nordic region, aim to boost tourism and strengthen international relations.

Nordic-China Relations: A Recent History

While Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden have all publicly adhered to the One China policy for over a decade, recent years have seen a more cautious approach from the Nordic countries in the face of China’s increasing assertion of its One China principle. This has led to a more defensive stance regarding Taiwan’s political status.

Historically, Sweden was the first Western country to establish official diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, on May 9, 1950, followed closely by Denmark.

In recent years, relations have been strained by issues such as a satirical newspaper cartoon in Denmark featuring the Chinese flag with coronavirus symbols, and Chinese sanctions against a Copenhagen-based NGO.

Impact on Nordic Travelers

The visa-free policy simplifies travel for Nordic citizens with connections to China, including business travelers, tourists, students, and families. Removing the visa application process is expected to encourage more frequent visits and strengthen ties between the Nordic countries and China.

Policy Duration

The current visa-free policy is scheduled to remain in effect through the end of 2026 for most participating countries.
