JD.com’s Joybuy Launches in Europe to Challenge Amazon and AliExpress

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has launched its Joybuy online marketplace in six European countries – the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg – marking a significant expansion beyond its domestic market and a direct challenge to established players like Amazon and fellow Chinese competitor AliExpress.

A New Contender in the European E-commerce Landscape

Joybuy debuted on Monday, March 16, 2026, aiming to capture a share of the rapidly growing European e-commerce market. The company emphasizes its unique position as a first-party retailer, differentiating itself from platforms that rely heavily on third-party sellers and the “de minimis” rule for low-value imports. Matthew Nobbs, U.K. Managing director of Joybuy, told CNBC, “We’re a retailer, first, and foremost for brands, and that’s our core.” [Reuters]

Focus on Speed and Reliability

A key differentiator for Joybuy is its commitment to fast delivery. The company offers same-day delivery at no extra charge on eligible orders – if ordered by 11am, customers receive their purchases before 11pm. This service currently covers over 17 million people, including households in London, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge. Customers outside these zones can expect next-day or standard delivery. [PRNewswire]

Growth in E-commerce and Changing Consumer Behavior

JD.com’s expansion comes at a time of continued growth in the e-commerce sector. E-commerce accounted for 16% of total retail sales in the closing quarter of 2025. [Reuters] This growth is being fueled not only by increased technology adoption but also by evolving consumer financial conditions. Recent data from PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that financial pressures are influencing shopping habits, with more consumers turning to online channels to compare prices, find promotions, and evaluate alternatives.

Specifically, 30% of consumers reported making an online retail purchase in the previous 30 days, a 13% year-over-year increase, while in-store retail participation declined by six percentage points during the same period. [Reuters] Financially stressed consumers are also more likely to purchase groceries online, suggesting that digital commerce is becoming a tool for budget management.
