Yu Deng, a native of Shenzhen, was recognized by the International Mathematical Union for his research on axiomatizing physics and establishing mathematical rules to explain branches of the science. His key paper was co-authored by Zaher Hani of the University of Michigan and Xiao Ma. The organization described Deng’s work at the University of Chicago as a leap forward in the centuries-long quest to derive basic physical laws from first principles.

International Recognition and Research Background

The International Mathematical Union also announced winners of other top honors during the event, including Oxford University’s Graeme Segal for the Chern Medal and the University of Washington’s Shayan Oveis Gharan for the Abacus Medal. Each Fields Medal recipient receives a gold medal depicting the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes and a cash prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars, equivalent to approximately 11,000 USD, according to the Simons Foundation.

While both Wang and Deng began their higher education at Peking University in Beijing, their subsequent training and research took place in the United States and Europe. Deng transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after two years in Beijing before completing a Ph.D. at Princeton University. Wang completed post-graduate studies in France after graduating from Peking University and earned her mathematics Ph.D. at MIT. Both mathematicians currently conduct their research outside of China.
