Edgars Vītols: A Leading Figure in Latvian Choral Music

Edgars Vītols is a prominent Latvian conductor and music pedagogue, deeply involved in the country’s vibrant choral tradition. He has established himself as a key figure in both performance and education, contributing significantly to the Latvian choral landscape.

Early Life and Education

Born on October 21, 1985, in Riga, Latvia, Vītols received his musical education at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Music Pedagogy, specializing in choral conducting, and a master’s degree in Music, specializing in conducting pedagogy in 2011. He also pursued studies in Law at the University of Latvia, earning a doctorate in pedagogy from the University of Latvia in 2018.

Conducting Career

Vītols has been the artistic director of the mixed choir “Aura” of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry of the University of Latvia since 2004. In 2008, he became the conductor and music pedagogue of the Riga State 2nd Gymnasium mixed choir, leading them to Grand Prix awards at the Latvian School Mixed Choir Competition in both 2012 and 2017. He has also served as a guest conductor for the World Festival Choir in Norway.

From 2015 to 2025, Vītols was the artistic director of the male choir “Absolventi.” He is currently a docent in the Department of Music Education at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and a member of the Academy’s senate.

National Significance and Television Appearance

Vītols has played a significant role in major Latvian musical events. He served as the artistic director and chief conductor of the closing concert of the Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival in 2015, 2021, and 2025. He also held the position of chief conductor for the Jelgava Choral District and the XXVII All-Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival.

Beyond his conducting roles, Vītols has also appeared as a judge on the popular TV show “Koru kari” (Choir Wars).

In the second live broadcast of “Koru kari,” Edgars Vītols, alongside choral music professionals Jānis Ozols and Baiba Sipeniece-Gavare, evaluated the performances of various choirs. The Ikšķile Sun Choir and Madonna’s green choir received the highest ratings from the jury. The Preiļi Purple Choir received the Primero Sympathy Award of 1,000 EUR. The Rēzekne Orange Choir, led by Dion Liepinas, was eliminated from the competition after receiving the lowest jury rating and insufficient audience votes.
