Spivey Court Filing Details Failed Tennessee Execution Attempt

Christa Pike survived two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital during a botched execution attempt in Tennessee. The execution team failed multiple times to establish an intravenous line before administering the drug, according to court documents filed by attorney Randy Spivey and reported by nos.nl.

The execution team used approximately 10 needles across both of Pike’s arms during the botched September 30 procedure. Lawyers stated that the team warned beforehand that some of Pike’s veins might rupture from repeated punctures.

Following the failed execution, Pike was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical care, where doctors applied life-saving measures. Attorney Randy Spivey initially received word that Pike was brain-dead.

To the surprise of her legal team and medical staff, Pike woke up and regained speech. By October 8, more than a week after the incident, her lawyers reported that she could walk slightly, though she remained groggy.

Spivey described severe physical damage to her arms and hands, noting they were enormously swollen. Attorney Stephen Ferrel added that her arms were severely damaged and barely usable.

Anesthesiologist Joel Zivot, who advises Pike’s legal team, told the BBC on October 8 that an insufficient amount of the lethal drug entered her bloodstream. Zivot stated that the pentobarbital likely spread into the tissue beneath her skin rather than circulating through her body.

Recovery And Return To Prison In October

By October 22, just over a month after the failed procedure, Pike’s health continued to improve. Her lawyers told TMZ that she could speak in full sentences and walk almost without assistance.

Medical staff monitored her cognitive and psychological functioning closely during her recovery. Defense attorneys cautioned that potential long-term effects could take more than a month to manifest.

On October 10, prison officials discharged Pike from the hospital and returned her to the facility where she has spent more than thirty years behind bars. The governor of Tennessee subsequently suspended all executions in the state for the remainder of the year.

Sentencing Background From 1995 And 1996

A court condemned Pike to death in 1996 for the murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer. The crime took place in 1995 when Pike was 18 years old.

Pike and her teenage boyfriend tortured and killed Slemmer. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Pike is the first person to survive her execution by lethal injection.

Following her return to prison, Pike’s attorneys argue that she has suffered enough and are pushing the governor of Tennessee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
