Christchurch Couple to Receive $40,000 After Finding $232K in Ceiling

A Christchurch, New Zealand, couple will receive $40,000 after a settlement was reached in the High Court regarding $232,400 in cash discovered hidden in the ceiling of their home. The couple purchased the property in December 2021.

Discovery and Initial Investigation

In May 2022, an electrician working in the ceiling space, along with one of the homeowners, found five sealed plastic bags concealed within the insulation. The bags contained $232,440, primarily in $50 notes. The homeowner subsequently contacted the police.

Police Forfeiture Attempt

Police initiated proceedings to forfeit the cash, believing it to be the proceeds of crime, likely linked to drug dealing. In February 2024, they applied to the High Court for a forfeiture order and obtained a restraining order against the money.

Couple’s Opposition and Settlement

The couple contested the forfeiture application, asserting their right to the found money. After submitting written arguments and presenting oral submissions, Justice Robert Osborne reserved his judgment. However, discussions following the hearing led to a settlement agreement.

High Court Ruling

On Tuesday, March 4, 2026, Justice Osborne approved the settlement in the High Court. The settlement stipulates that the cash will remain with the Crown, while the homeowners will be compensated with $40,000.

Justice Osborne stated that denying any reward to those who hand found money to authorities could inadvertently encourage dishonesty. Source: Stuff.co.nz, Source: 1News.co.nz
