Chronic Kidney Disease: A Growing Global Health Concern

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasingly recognized as a significant public health issue worldwide, affecting millions and placing a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Early detection, management of underlying conditions, and preventative measures are crucial in mitigating the impact of this often-silent disease.

Prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease

Approximately 3.1 million Kenyans are currently living with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), according to the Ministry of Health . Globally, the number of patients with chronic kidney disease reaches a serious number of 850 million .

Causes and Risk Factors

The rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes are major drivers of CKD . Other contributing factors include obesity and, less commonly, polycystic kidney disease, obstructive nephropathy, and glomerulonephritis .

Diagnosis and Treatment

CKD often progresses silently, without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, increasing the risk of late diagnosis and complications. Routine screening for blood pressure and blood glucose at community and primary healthcare levels is being prioritized to enable early detection .

Treatment options for kidney failure include hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis . In some cases, kidney transplantation may be an option, with access to these services expanding in certain regions . In the Cayman Islands, the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability is working to establish a clear regulatory framework for transplant procedures .

Prevention and Management

Preventative measures, including regular health checks, a balanced diet, adequate water consumption, regular physical activity, and avoiding harmful habits, are essential in slowing the progression of CKD . The Ministry of Health in the Cayman Islands is also strengthening prevention and management of hypertension and diabetes through the Pan American Hearts Organization (PAHO) HEARTS initiative .

Current Treatment Capacity

In Kenya, treatments for chronic kidney disease continue in 598 hospitals and 969 centers affiliated with the Ministry of Health across the country . Approximately 70,000 people in Kenya are currently receiving dialysis treatment .

The Social Health Authority (SHA) in Kenya has processed over KSh 104 billion in healthcare claims, supporting essential services including dialysis, nephrectomy and kidney transplantation .
