Location Matters: New Study Reveals Cities Best Positioned for New Year’s Resolution success

Millions of Americans embark on journeys of self-improvement each year with New Year’s resolutions, yet many find these goals abandoned before the arrival of summer. While personal discipline is crucial, a recent study from WalletHub indicates that a city’s inherent characteristics can significantly influence the likelihood of achieving those resolutions.

For 2026, WalletHub analyzed 182 major U.S. cities, evaluating them based on 57 key indicators across five core categories: health, finances, school & work, bad habits, and relationships. this comprehensive analysis aimed to identify locations that provide the most supportive habitat for residents striving for personal growth. The study considered not only the prevalence of resolution-making but also the extent to which a city’s attributes facilitate or impede success.

“Living in the right city can do wonders for resolutions,” explains Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst.”Cities offering robust access to healthy food options and ample exercise opportunities empower individuals to prioritize their well-being. Similarly, strong economies and thriving job markets can accelerate career advancement and income improvement.”

Lupo emphasizes the importance of aligning resolutions with a city’s strengths, stating, “Understanding your city’s advantages can definitely help you set an achievable goal.”

The study’s findings reveal the top eight cities offering the most favorable environments for successfully keeping New Year’s resolutions, providing valuable insight for those seeking a location that supports their personal improvement objectives.
