French Football Facing Severe Climate Threat
Climate change poses a severe and escalating threat to football across France, disrupting match calendars and straining playing surfaces. According to an extensive study commissioned by the French Football Federation (FFF) and conducted by the consulting firm Sport 1.5, 93 percent of French football clubs have already experienced match postponements due to severe weather events.
The report identifies five primary climate risks threatening the sport: extreme heatwaves, prolonged droughts, severe thunderstorms, heavy winter rainfall, and flash flooding. Researchers warn that these pressures will intensify significantly over the coming decades, forcing major structural adaptations in how the sport is organized and played nationwide.
Facility Vulnerabilities and Artificial Turf Limits
The physical infrastructure of French football faces immediate strain from shifting weather patterns. According to the Sport 1.5 study, one-third of all football pitches in France are currently located in designated flood zones, leaving them acutely vulnerable to rising precipitation extremes and overflowing waterways.
Compounding the problem, synthetic turf fields fail to offer a reliable alternative during high-temperature events. The FFF-commissioned research reveals that artificial pitches can absorb heat to reach temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius higher than the ambient air. When outdoor temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius, these synthetic surfaces can easily exceed 70 degrees Celsius, creating dangerous playing conditions for athletes.
Training Disruption Projections for 2030
The operational impact on clubs will accelerate rapidly by the end of the decade. By 2030, the study projects that more than 300,000 hours of training sessions and seasonal training camps will be directly threatened by extreme heat.
At the same time, changing precipitation patterns and high evaporation rates will result in an average of 112 days of dry, hardened soils each year.
Mid-Century Heat Constraints and Calendar Overhauls
Looking toward mid-century, projections indicate that the number of days exceeding 32 degrees Celsius on football pitches will triple by 2050. Researchers estimate that roughly 100,000 matches scheduled between June and September will face severe heat constraints, including 46,000 youth fixtures.
These rising temperatures threaten to uproot traditional domestic competition schedules. Nearly 80 percent of Coupe de France matches are currently played during the peak heat of August and September, forcing tournament organizers to contemplate major calendar overhauls.
Eighty-Six Percent Grass Pitch Risk by 2100
By the year 2100, the report estimates that 86 percent of natural grass pitches could experience at least 80 days of dry soil annually. In extreme scenarios, normal football practice could become entirely unfeasible for nearly three months out of the year in affected regions.
In response to these findings, the FFF is formulating a comprehensive adaptation strategy. Federation leadership plans to unveil its official adaptation measures and updated health and safety protocols during the second half of 2026.
