A pleasure craft carrying seven people, including three children, drifted near the Capo d’Orlando lighthouse due to engine failure on Monday afternoon, prompting a rescue operation by the Italian Coast Guard amid rough sea conditions, according to the Guardia Costiera.

The emergency began when the vessel encountered mechanical trouble just hundreds of meters from the Capo d’Orlando lighthouse. The distress call reached the operational room of the Ufficio Circondariale Marittimo of Sant’Agata di Militello. Due to adverse sea conditions, officials immediately activated emergency protocols to coordinate the rescue, according to the Coast Guard.
The Guardia Costiera dispatched the GC B083 inflatable boat from the local maritime office in the port of Capo d’Orlando. Despite choppy waters and rough weather, the unit reached the disabled boat quickly, preventing the situation from worsening. The boaters managed to restart their engine while responders arrived on the scene.
Vessel Escorted Safely to Port
Coast Guard personnel verified that all seven occupants, including the three children, were in good health before assisting the vessel back to port. The maritime unit escorted the craft to the port of Capo d’Orlando, where it was safely moored without injury or damage reported to anyone on board.
