Heavy Rains and Freezing Temperatures Strike Multiple Mexican States
A combination of tropical cyclone activity, a strengthening cold front, and a polar air mass is bringing heavy rainfall, high winds, and freezing morning temperatures across large portions of Mexico. The weather pattern, tracked by the National Meteorological Service, brings freezing conditions to mountainous regions alongside intense downpours in coastal and northern territories.
Meteorologists report that the active weather system impacts several regions simultaneously. Daytime storms flood roadways and swell rivers in western and northern states, while high-altitude communities record near-freezing dawn temperatures.
Tropical Cyclone Simon and Cold Front Interactions
Tropical cyclone Simon positioned itself over the middle portion of Sinaloa, triggering intense downpours across parts of that state and neighbouring Nayarit, accompanied by high waves along the coast. Concurrently, a polar air mass began reinforcing the second cold front of the season. This system interacts with an upper-level trough, the subtropical jet stream, and a low-pressure channel to sweep across the country’s northern and northeastern regions.

Coahuila bears the brunt of the heaviest rainfall associated with the cold front interaction. The incoming polar air mass drives a sharp temperature drop across northern, northeastern, eastern, and central Mexico, setting the stage for prolonged cold mornings in high-elevation terrain.
The progression of these weather systems from Wednesday through Friday alters regional forecasts significantly:
- Wednesday, October 14: Sinaloa and Nayarit face torrential downpours reaching up to 150 mm. Mountainous areas in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Estado de México, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca record morning lows between 0 and 5 °C.
- Thursday, October 15: Heavy rainfall shifts to northern Coahuila, while Chihuahua and Durango experience severe downpours. Morning freezes return to high-altitude zones across Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Estado de México, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.
- Friday, October 16: Coahuila absorbs intense rainfall totals up to 150 mm. Chihuahua, Durango, Nuevo León, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo register heavy to very heavy precipitation.
Freezing Mountain Forecasts and Freezing Lows
Conditions in high-altitude zones persist through the end of the week. By the early hours of Saturday, October 17, morning minimum temperatures of 0 to 5 °C will extend to mountainous areas in an even broader list of entities, including Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Estado de México, Ciudad de México, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.
