Séamus Coleman: Ready to Lead Ireland into Crucial World Cup Play-off
Prague, Czech Republic – Republic of Ireland captain Séamus Coleman has affirmed the team’s readiness for Thursday’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Czechia, emphasizing the growth and resilience of the current squad. Speaking at a press conference in Prague, the veteran defender acknowledged that the pressure of such a high-stakes match might have been overwhelming for younger players in the past, but believes that has changed.
Lessons Learned from Past Play-offs
Coleman, one of only two players in the current Ireland squad with experience navigating a qualification play-off, drew parallels to the successful Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. He recalled Ireland’s first leg against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Zenica in November 2015, a 1-1 draw secured by a goal from Robbie Brady, and the subsequent victory that sealed their place in the tournament. “It was a tough game, it was a hostile environment and I think tomorrow night will be that and will be the same,” Coleman stated. He believes the spirit and determination displayed in Zenica can serve as a blueprint for success at the Fortuna Arena.
A More Prepared Squad
Coleman highlighted the progress made by the current Irish team, noting that the manager has focused on addressing past challenges and building a more robust mentality. “This group has come through a lot,” he said. “Maybe two years ago, it would have been a lot for the young lads to take. But I think everyone now has stepped up and are prepared for what’s to come.” He likewise emphasized the importance of calm heads and a controlled approach to the game.
Sharing Experience with the Next Generation
The Everton captain revealed that he and Robbie Brady have been actively sharing their experiences with the younger members of the squad, providing insights into the demands of representing Ireland on the international stage. “We’ve spoken over the years, to be honest, as a group. The younger lads…would ask the senior lads about those times,” Coleman explained. “Now we’ve all got an opportunity together to make something special happen.”
Praise for Jake O’Brien
Coleman specifically praised the development of his Everton teammate, Jake O’Brien, highlighting his consistent performances, and dedication. “Jake has been brilliant. He’s first and foremost a great lad but he is available all the time, he plays every minute of every game,” Coleman said. “He has been great in the green shirt as well. I’m really happy for him and his family.”
Team Health and Coleman’s Fitness
Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson confirmed that the entire 25-man squad is fit and available for selection. Despite limited playing time for Everton recently, Coleman assured reporters that he is feeling sharp and prepared. “Of course everyone wants to be playing, but that’s the way it works,” he said. “I didn’t have many minutes before the last games but, to be honest, I train 100% every single day.”
A Nation’s Hope
Coleman underscored the significance of representing Ireland and the desire to bring joy to the nation. “Selfishly it would be amazing because as players you do want to do as much as you can in the game,” he said. “After the last two games, seeing what it did to our country, it was incredible…That is so important. As much as us players want to do it for ourselves…we do want to do it for the people of our country as well.”
