The Detroit Red Wings appointed assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager on Tuesday, placing a temporary hold on their search for a permanent replacement while assigning him leadership of the front office and the Grand Rapids Griffins, according to official team announcements.
In his new capacity, Horcoff will oversee day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap matters, and hockey operations personnel, reporting directly to Red Wings Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch.

Chris Ilitch stated that the team remains committed to a thorough and deliberate hiring process. According to the team’s official statement, Ilitch noted that Horcoff remains under active consideration for the permanent position, pointing to upcoming priorities such as brokering a new contract with restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson.
“Shawn Horcoff has been instrumental to our organization, allowing us to maintain our high standards while conducting a thorough search rather than working against a deadline,” the Red Wings stated.
Leadership Background and Context
Horcoff brings a lengthy playing career and executive experience to the interim post. Selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round of the 1998 NHL Draft, Horcoff recorded 511 points in 1,008 regular-season games across stints with the Oilers, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks from 2000 to 2016, as noted by NHL.com.
Transitioning into the front office, Horcoff previously served as the general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s American Hockey League affiliate, alongside his assistant general manager duties. The front office pivot occurs alongside other organizational changes, including Steve Yzerman’s transition from general manager—a role he held since 2019—to a new position as Senior Advisor to the Governor and CEO.
