Columbia Woman Charged with Arson in Residential Fire

COLUMBIA, MO – March 21, 2026 – Anjaleque Bragg, 31, of Columbia, Missouri, has been formally charged with first-degree arson and first-degree assault following a residential fire on Newton Drive. The incident occurred at a two-story duplex in the 1900 block of Newton Drive around 10:00 a.m. On March 20, 2026.

Details of the Incident

According to the Columbia Police Department, officers responded to the scene to assist the Columbia Fire Department with a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames and smoke emanating from the duplex. They successfully extinguished the fire within approximately four minutes according to a press release from the city of Columbia.

Suspect Confession and Motive

Court documents reveal that Bragg allegedly confessed to starting the fire, telling a firefighter she “did not want to live there anymore.” While she reportedly denied intending to harm herself or others, she made statements suggesting she did not expect to survive the incident. Bragg reportedly used lighter fluid and a match to ignite the fire as reported by KRCG TV.

Evacuation and Injuries
