Microsoft 365 Copilot Notebooks Get a Major Redesign for Enhanced Collaboration

Microsoft has announced a significant update to Copilot Notebooks, a key component of Microsoft 365 Copilot, designed to streamline project management, content creation, and in-depth research. Copilot Notebooks functions as an AI-powered workspace, allowing users to integrate various file types and build upon them with contextual grounding limited to the workspace’s content.

New Three-Column Layout Improves Navigation

The redesign introduces a new three-column layout that consolidates references, content within Copilot Pages, and Copilot chats into a single, unified interface. This aims to simplify navigation and reduce the need to switch between different contexts, enhancing user efficiency.

Expanded File Type Support and Overview Page

The updated Copilot Notebooks now support a wider range of reference materials, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files, OneNote pages, and PDFs, in addition to Copilot Pages. Microsoft has indicated that support for even more file and content types is planned for the future. A new Overview page provides users with an executive summary of the entire workspace, which can be refreshed with a single click.

Quick Create with Copilot and AI Agent Integration

A new “Quick create with Copilot” feature enables users to transform raw information into structured content formats, such as audio overviews, study guides, and quizzes. This functionality can be used in conjunction with AI agents like Researcher and Designer to further accelerate content creation. Microsoft 365 Copilot leverages Work IQ to tailor the AI experience to individual users and organizational knowledge.

Enhanced Collaboration Through Sharing

Copilot Notebooks can now be shared with other users, facilitating cross-functional collaboration and knowledge exchange. This feature allows teams to co-create and work together more effectively within a shared AI-powered workspace.

Apply Cases and Availability

Microsoft suggests Copilot Notebooks is particularly useful for project management, tracking recurring workflows, handling short-term tasks, and conducting comprehensive research. The revamped Copilot Notebooks is generally available via the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Web, Windows, Mac, and Mobile, as well as the OneNote app on Windows. Access requires a commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot license and an active SharePoint or OneDrive subscription. It is currently not available for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium accounts.
