They are out to ruin somebody’s Christmas

It’s a heartbreaking time for many families in Cork, as thieves are targeting Christmas presents right before the big day. People are discovering their homes have been broken into, and it’s not just valuables they’re after – it’s the gifts meant for loved ones that are disappearing.

Gardai are warning residents to be extra vigilant, especially with the increasing darkness. They’ve seen a worrying rise in burglaries over the last week, and they believe a specific group is responsible. “We don’t think these are random acts,” said Sergeant Michael O’Connell. “It looks like someone is deliberately trying to cause distress during what should be a joyful season.”

One family in Mayfield had their entire Christmas haul stolen from under the tree. “My kids are devastated,” said Sarah Murphy, the mother of two. “they’d been writing letters to Santa for months, and now it’s all gone. It’s just awful; it realy feels like someone’s trying to ruin Christmas for us.”

Gardai are advising people to take several precautions. Don’t leave presents visible from windows, and if you’re going away, ask a neighbour to collect your mail and keep an eye on your property. It’s also a good idea to set your home alarm, even if you’re just popping out for a short time. They’re also urging anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact them instantly.

“We’re doing everything we can to catch these people,” Sergeant O’Connell added. “But we need the public’s help. If you see anything out of the ordinary,no matter how small it truly seems, please let us know. We want to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe and happy Christmas.”

You can contact your local garda station or call the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111. Let’s all work together to protect our communities and make sure no one has their Christmas ruined this year.
