French production company Cottonwood Media has bought back the entire stake held by its parent firm, Federation Studios, returning to fully independent status after nearly a decade. Co-founders David Michel, Zoé Carrera Allaix, and Cécile Laurenson executed the buyout to steer the company through its next phase of growth and expand its footprint in the young-adult content market.
Independent Operations and Executive Leadership
Founded in 2014, Cottonwood Media became a subsidiary of Federation Studios the following year under an agreement that simultaneously made Michel a founding partner of Federation. Following the current buyout, Michel, Laurenson, and Carrera Allaix retain full operational control of the production house while operating outside the parent corporate structure. In a joint statement, the co-founders noted that the transaction provides the agility required to scale operations amid a market revival for young-adult programming. Despite the structural separation, commercial ties remain intact. Federation International, the sales division of Federation Studios, will continue distributing Cottonwood’s existing television catalogue and holds first-look distribution rights for the studio’s upcoming slates.
Catalog Expansion and Young-Adult Strategy
Cottonwood has primarily built its reputation in the tween and teen live-action space through international co-productions backed by major broadcasters. Key live-action projects include Find Me in Paris, co-produced with Hulu and ZDF, and Theodosia, developed alongside HBO Max, ZDF, and Globo. Additional teen dramas in the studio’s portfolio include Spellbound for Hulu, ZDF, and France Télévisions, as well as The Lady Grace Mysteries for ZDF and BBC Children’s. In the animation sector, the company is currently producing 20 Dance Street for France Télévisions and ZDF, following preschool titles such as The Ollie & Moon Show. Leveraging its newfound independence, Cottonwood plans to roll out multiple international co-productions aimed at viewers aged 16 to 25 and 18 to 29.
