Washoe County Commission Updates: january 9, 2024 Meeting

Here are key updates from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting held on January 9, 2024:

1. Approval of Funds for Community Outreach:

The Board approved $2,500 from District 3 to Green Vibe World to support community outreach and cleanups along the Truckee River corridor.

2.Radon Action Month Proclamation:

The Board proclaimed January as National Radon Action month. Commissioner Clara Andriola read a proclamation highlighting the dangers of radon gas, a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and a meaningful contributor to lung cancer deaths overall.

The Board emphasized the importance of radon testing, which is the only reliable method for detection. Testing kits are available for $15 from the University of Nevada Reno, Cooperative Extension (https://extension.unr.edu/publication.aspx?PubID=2619).Currently, kits are available for free while supplies last through the end of February in recognition of Radon Action Month.
