Couples’ Sleep Health: The Impact of Bedtime Differences
A recent study highlights a critical, often overlooked factor impacting sleep health, particularly in older adults: differing bedtimes between couples. What seems like a minor inconvenience can significantly undermine sleep quality and overall well-being.
Only a Small Percentage of Couples Sleep Simultaneously
Research from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry Open, analyzed the sleep patterns of 859 couples (1,718 individuals) aged 60 and older. The findings revealed that only 23.4% of couples, approximately 201 pairs, consistently fell asleep at the same time. A substantial 76.6% went to bed at different times.
The Consequences of Mismatched Bedtimes
Couples who slept at the same time experienced better sleep quality and efficiency. Conversely, variations in bedtime were associated with a decline in sleep quality. Specifically, when one partner went to bed first and the other joined them later, the sleep latency – the time it takes to fall asleep – of the first partner increased by up to 53 minutes. Longer sleep latency indicates poorer sleep quality.
Dyadic Sleep and Sleep Disruption
This phenomenon, known as “dyadic sleep,” demonstrates how one partner’s actions can directly influence the other’s sleep. Activities like turning on lights, using smartphones, or simply moving in bed can disrupt a partner who is already asleep. Even though we may feel we sleep independently, we are demonstrably affected by our partner’s sleep rhythm.
Gender Differences in Sleep Sensitivity
The study also revealed notable gender differences. Women experienced a more significant deterioration in sleep quality when bedtimes differed. This trend persisted over an eight-year follow-up period. Women with consistently mismatched bedtimes showed reduced sleep time and declining sleep efficiency, whereas men did not exhibit the same pattern. Researchers suggest women are more sensitive to changes in the sleep environment, and hormonal changes and insomnia, common in older age, can amplify the impact of a partner’s behavior.
Implications for an Aging Population
Given that the average sleep efficiency of Koreans is 82%, falling below recommended levels, the sleep health of elderly women is particularly vulnerable. Professor Kim Ki-woong emphasized that consistent bedtime is a modifiable lifestyle factor and that managing sleep disorders requires a couple-level approach, in addition to individual strategies. This research underscores the importance of considering sleep not merely as an individual concern, but as a component of relationship health, especially as societies age.
As Korea, and many other nations, face a super-aging society, prioritizing sleep as a shared experience is crucial for maintaining health and well-being in later life.
