Cristiano Ronaldo Named World’s Highest-Paid Athlete for 2025

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again secured the top spot on Sportico’s annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, earning an impressive $260 million (£194m) in 2025. This marks the third consecutive year the Al-Nassr forward has led the rankings, significantly outpacing his long-time rival, Lionel Messi, who earned $130 million (£97m).

Ronaldo’s income is largely attributed to his lucrative deal with Al-Nassr, reportedly worth $200 million (£149m) annually, supplemented by $60 million (£45m) from various endorsement and business ventures. His substantial social media presence continues to amplify his off-field earnings. He has consistently earned over $100 million (£74m) for nine years running, exceeding the $200 million mark for the third time in his career.

Lionel Messi secured the third position on the list, generating $130 million (£97m) through his Inter miami contract, extending through 2028, and partnerships with brands like Adidas.

The rankings also highlighted a notable decline for Neymar, who fell to No. 30 after a challenging year that included the termination of his al-Hilal contract and a return to South American football, resulting in a nearly $50 million (£37m) decrease in earnings.

Notably, a total of 13 footballers feature within the top 100 highest-paid athletes. Both Ronaldo and Messi are anticipated to participate in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Neymar’s participation hinges on his fitness under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti. Ronaldo is currently negotiating an extension to his Al-Nassr contract, potentially playing with the club through the summer of 2027 and possibly beyond, even at the age of 40.
