Crucible Theatre Set for Redesign Ahead of 50th World Snooker Championship

The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield is undergoing its most significant redesign in history as it prepares to host the 50th World Snooker Championship in 2026. The changes include the introduction of new premium seating, offering fans an unprecedented viewing experience.

A Historic Venue

Since 1977, the Crucible Theatre has been the iconic home of the World Snooker Championship . This year’s tournament, the 50th edition held at the venue, will take place from Saturday, April 18th to Monday, May 4th, with qualifying rounds held elsewhere in Sheffield . The event attracts around 12,000 snooker fans annually, with a global television audience of approximately 500 million viewers across 150 countries .

New ‘Legends Walk Premium’ Seats

For the first time, the Crucible stage will be redesigned to accommodate “Legends Walk Premium” seats. These exclusive seats will surround the players’ walk-on route, providing fans with a unique and immersive experience . WST described the new viewing area as “the most intimate, immersive and electrifying way to experience the World Championship!” . The area, previously reserved for commentators and officials, will host a select number of guests in premium chair seating from the opening day until the final session.

Limited Capacity and Future of the Crucible

The Crucible currently has a capacity of around 980 fans per session . Debate continues regarding whether the venue’s limited capacity hinders commercial opportunities and potential prize money for players. The current contract between World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council allows the Crucible to host the competition until 2027, but discussions are ongoing regarding the event’s long-term future . Fans expressed frustration in late 2025 due to a lack of updates from snooker authorities regarding the venue’s future .
