India Defeats New Zealand by Four Wickets in Christchurch Series Opener
India secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Christchurch on Thursday, overcoming a spirited home fightback to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series. India successfully chased a target of 226 in 19.4 overs, marking the visitors’ highest-ever successful run chase despite a mid-innings wobble.
New Zealand Posts Record Home Total Behind Glenn Phillips Knock
Put in to bat under favourable conditions, New Zealand reached 225-4, representing the hosts’ biggest T20 score against India on home soil. Openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen set a solid platform by helping the team reach 65-1 in the powerplay, with Allen blasting 45 off 24 balls. Glenn Phillips then took charge with an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries, featuring eight fours and three sixes, while Bevon Jacobs added 31 before being run out.
India’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring rate. All five bowlers used by India conceded 10 runs or more per over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to international play for the first time in four years—having last featured against New Zealand in 2022—and endured an expensive outing with figures of 0-49.
Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir Secure Record Run Chase
In response, India’s opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma put the hosts under pressure by stitching together a 93-run partnership. Samson hammered 67 off 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, propelling India to 94-1 inside the powerplay.
New Zealand struck back by removing three batters in quick succession, but Shreyas Iyer countered with 42 off 28 balls to wrest back momentum. Naman Dhir then applied the finishing touches with an unbeaten 42 to seal the victory.

“When they click, they set up the game for us, and the rest of us try to steady the ship and finish,” India captain Shreyas Iyer said. “He [Dhir] gives us lots of options. I personally feel the calm and composed nature he showed tonight, it was magnificent.”
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged the pressure applied by the visitors’ top order. “They put us under pressure. Another big powerplay from them. We were not at our best,” Santner said. “In the middle, we did well to squeeze them. Tight game and both teams might look at things that could have gone here or there.”
