Havana, March 18 (ACN) – Cuban volleyball icons Ana Ibis Fernández and Joel Despaigne have been nominated for induction into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, as announced by the organization based in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The announcement marks a significant moment for Cuban sports, potentially adding to the nation’s representation within the Hall of Fame.

A Legacy of Excellence

According to a post on Facebook group VOLEIBOL CUBANO POR EL MUNDO, Cuba currently has seven members in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame and could increase that number to nine with the successful induction of Fernández and Despaigne.

Fernández is a standout candidate in the Female Indoor Player category, alongside Foluke Akinradewo-Gunderson (USA), Ekaterina Gamova (Russia), and Fabiana “Fabi” Alvim (Brazil). She is recognized as one of only two players worldwide to have secured four Olympic medals in volleyball. Beyond Olympic success, Fernández boasts a remarkable list of accolades, including:

Joel Despaigne: A Dominant Force in Men’s Volleyball

Despaigne is nominated in the Male Indoor Player category, competing with Kim Ho-Chul (Korea), Yuriy Panchenko (Ukraine), and Rafael Pascual (Spain). He was named the best player in the world during the 1989-90 season and was nominated in the International Volleyball Federation poll to determine the best volleyball player of the 20th century.

Despaigne’s accomplishments include:

  • Multiple podium finishes in the World League, including being runner-up in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1997, and securing a bronze medal in 1995.
  • Medals at the Pan American Games: Gold in 1991, Silver in 1987, and Bronze in 1995.

Selection Process and Announcement

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame announced the finalists on March 17, 2026 as reported on their official website. These finalists will be submitted to the International Selection Committee and a Players/Coaches Fan Vote. The Class of 2026 inductees will be officially announced on Monday, May 18.

“This year’s group of finalists truly reflects the global reach and evolution of our sport,” said George Mulry, Executive Director of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. “From Olympic champions and world title holders to transformational leaders and pioneers, each of these individuals has left a lasting impact on volleyball in their own unique way.”
