Steve Miller Takes Over Cubs International Scouting
The Chicago Cubs are hiring longtime Tampa Bay Rays international scouting director Steve Miller as the club’s new vice president of international scouting. The appointment follows initial reporting by Francys Romero of BeisbolFR. Miller steps into the role after spending more than a dozen seasons within the Rays organization, taking charge of their international scouting department in 2019.
Cubs Front Office Shifts Roles and Acquires Clay Holmes
Miller’s arrival coincides with broader structural adjustments across the Cubs front office. Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reported that Chicago shifted former international scouting vice president Louie Eljaua to a new role at the start of the season. The organization also reassigned veteran amateur scouting and player development official Alex Suarez to a special assistant position under president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer. During this period, the international scouting department generated notable trade assets, acquiring right-hander Clay Holmes from the Mets in exchange for infield prospect Jefferson Rojas, and reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels for catcher Moisés Ballesteros.
From College Coaching to MLB Front Offices
Miller graduated from Huntingdon College in 1993 and subsequently served as a coach at Central Missouri State University. He transitioned to professional scouting in 2006 by joining the Toronto Blue Jays as an area scout after leaving the college coaching ranks. He spent seven seasons with Toronto, working as a Southeast and South regional cross-checker and Texas and Midwest area supervisor before joining Tampa Bay in 2013 as an international cross-checker.
