European nations are increasing their military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean to support Cyprus following recent attacks and escalating regional instability. Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands will deploy naval assets to the area, responding to concerns over potential conflict spillover from the Middle East.

Escalating Regional Concerns

The decision to send naval support comes after a series of incidents highlighting the growing tensions in the region. A drone strike targeted a British military base in Cyprus on Monday, raising fears of a wider conflict . An Iranian-made drone struck an airport in Azerbaijan, injuring two people.

European Response and NATO Article 5

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced on Thursday that Italy would follow France, Spain, and the Netherlands in providing assistance to Cyprus . Crosetto cited NATO Article 5 – the principle of collective defense – as justification for the deployment of Italian “naval assets” to protect Cyprus, which has been targeted by Iranian drones .

France has already positioned a frigate off the coast of Cyprus, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the island nation in coordination with its European allies . Spain is deploying the Cristóbal Colón frigate, expected to reach Crete around March 10th, which is equipped for air defense .
