Michaela Musilová Secures Virgin Galactic Suborbital Spaceflight
Slovak astrobiologist Michaela Musilová announced plans to fly to space next year aboard a Virgin Galactic suborbital flight launching from Spaceport America in New Mexico. Musilová stated on Instagram that the mission marks a milestone she has worked toward throughout her career.
The suborbital flight will cross the boundary of space without entering Earth’s orbit. Musilová shared details of the upcoming flight in an email to Novinky, explaining that she will serve as the mission’s research lead.
Scientific Experiments Scheduled for the Flight
Musilová plans to conduct multiple scientific experiments during the suborbital flight, pending completion of safety checks and pre-flight reviews. She will coordinate these research projects in partnership with various American and European institutions.

Mauna Loa Research Station Direction
From 2018 to 2022, Musilová directed the HI-SEAS research station located on the Mauna Loa active volcano in Hawaii at an elevation of 2,500 meters. The volcanic terrain shares environmental similarities with regions of Mars. During her tenure, she directed dozens of simulations alongside NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and international space organizations.
Her analog fieldwork also includes desert simulations in Utah and glacier research in Greenland. Additionally, she worked on cleaning the Curiosity rover prior to its launch to Mars.
Parallel Czech Space Missions
Musilová’s upcoming flight follows previous milestones for Slovak and Czech space exploration. Ivan Bella flew to the Mir space station in 1999 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as the first Slovak astronaut.
Meanwhile, Czech astronaut Aleš Svoboda is currently undergoing advanced training in the United States for an upcoming mission. Svoboda is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in a Crew Dragon capsule to the International Space Station (ISS), making him the first Czech astronaut to visit the orbiting laboratory.
